A total of 47,984 people died due to road accidents on National Highways, including on expressways, during calendar year 2020, Parliament was informed on Thursday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said as many as 53,872 persons died due to road accidents on National Highways, including on expressways, in 2019. Gadkari said the major causes of accidents on the National Highways (NHs) are vehicle design and condition, road engineering, over-speeding, drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug, driving on wrong side, jumping the red light, use of mobile phone, etc. He also said the ministry has issued guidelines for improving the road safety through road safety audits at all stages (design stage, construction stage and O&M stage) by engaging independent road safety experts. At least 12 labourers were killed after a vehicle carrying them overturned in Buldhana district of Maharashtra on Friday, police said. The incident occurred near Dusarbid village at Tadegaon Phata on Sindkhedraja-Mehkar Road around 12 noon when the labourers were being taken for the work on Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway project, an official said. A total of 16 labourers were travelling in the vehicle that was also transporting steel for the highway project, he said. "The vehicle was speeding and it overturned due to a large pothole on the road. At least 12 labourers were killed and others suffered injuries," Buldhana Superintendent of Police Arvind Chavria told PTI. The government has proposed a steep hike in compensation amount to Rs 2 lakh from Rs 25,000 for the families of individuals who are killed in hit and run road accidents. In case of a person sustaining grievous injuries due to such an accident, the compensation amount will be Rs 50,000. The road transport and highways ministry has proposed a scheme to enhance the compensation amount for hit and run road accident victims. There were a total of 4,49,002 road accidents in the country in 2019 causing 1,51,113 deaths, as per official data. A draft scheme was notified by the ministry on August 2. The Scheme for Compensation of Hit & Run Accident Victims seeks to enhance "compensation (from Rs 12,500 to Rs 50,000 for grievous hurt and from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2,00,000 for death)," an official statement said on Wednesday.
