Massive earthquakes have killed more than 4,500 people in Turkey and Syria, injuring thousands of others and causing widespread destruction. The quakes and over 40 aftershocks toppled buildings and sent rescuers scrambling through the rubble to find survivors.

The death toll was expected to rise with experts warning that aftershocks could continue for days or weeks.
