Historic feat: The sailing events in which India would compete in Tokyo

Indian sailors on Thursday scripted history after an unprecedented four of them qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in three events. Nethra Kumanan (first Indian woman sailor to make the Olympics cut in the laser radial event), Vishnu Saravanan (Laser Standard Class) and the pair of Ganapathy Chengappa and Varun Thakkar (49er Class) made it a memorable outing for India at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Oman. Here is an explainer on the three events in which the Indian sailors would be taking part in the Tokyo Games: LASER RADIAL WOMEN: =============== The Laser Radial is a singlehanded boat, meaning that it is sailed by one person. The Laser Radial is one of the most popular boats in the world, due to its broad accessibility and simplicity to set up and sail. The Laser Radial uses a flexible and short lower mast, with a sail area 18 per cent smaller than the Laser Standard. It was first introduced as an Olympic discipline at Beijing 2008. Nethra Kumanan becomes first Indian woman sailor to qualify for Olympics

Nethra Kumanan on Wednesday became the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics after she was assured of a top-place finish in the laser radial event of the Asian Qualifiers in Oman. The 23-year-old Kumanan has a 21-point advantage over her nearest rival, who also happens to be an Indian -- Ramya Saravanan -- in the Laser Radial Class event with one race to go on Thursday. The Chennai-based Kumanan currently has 18 points while Saravanan has 39 on the penultimate day of competitions in Mussanah Open Championship, which is a joint Asian and African Olympic qualifying event. In sailing, the athlete who has the least points wins the competition. The final race on Thursday is a 20 pointer and Kumanan has already sealed it with one round to go. Laser Radial is a singlehanded boat, which means that it is sailed by only one person. "Yes, Kumanan has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics with one race to go on the final day on Thursday," Asian Sailing Federation President Malav Sh

US Olympic swim trials to allow 50% capacity

The US Olympic swimming trials will allow about 50% capacity for the June competition in Omaha, Nebraska. A temporary pool will be installed at the CHI Health Center arena, which is to host the trials for the fourth straight time. The arena near downtown Omaha normally seats about 14,000 for swimming, but that will be cut in half to mitigate the potential spread of the coronavirus. Since more than 90% of tickets were sold for the trials in their original date in 2020, USA Swimming plans a complete refund. An entirely new sale will begin April 16. The governing body already took the unprecedented step of dividing the trials into two parts. Lower-ranked swimmers will compete June 4-7. The top finishers from that group advance to the second part June 13-20, which will feature the country's top-ranked swimmers and leading medal contenders for the Tokyo Games. USA Swimming split the meet to lessen the number of competitors and support personnel on the main pool desk and practice
