Nagaland govt to hold Assembly session on resolution to repeal AFSPA

In the aftermath of the killing of 14 civilians by security forces in Mon district, the Nagaland government on Thursday decided to hold a special session of the Assembly to discuss and pass a resolution for repealing the AFSPA, a government +spokesperson said. The special session is tentatively scheduled for December 20 and the Governor of Assam and Nagaland Jagdish Mukhi will formally summon it, Minister for Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu told PTI here. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, gives the Army powers of arrest and detention in disturbed areas'. He said that the decision was taken during a meeting of the Core Committee on Naga Political Issue of the state government held here during the day. The Core Committee headed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also comprises Cabinet ministers, besides representatives from all the political parties in the North-eastern state. For the second time since second wave, no Covid-19 deaths in Assam

Assam reported zero deaths due to COVID-19 on Friday. It was for the second time since the second wave of the pandemic hit the state, no death was reported in a day. COVID fatalities were nil for the last time on October 19. Meanwhile, 175 new cases were detected during the day, higher by 35 against the previous day, a National Health Missio (NHM) bulletin said. Among the fresh infections, Kamrup Metropolitan recorded 92, Barpeta (nine), and Darrang and Dibrugarh (eight each). The coronavirus death toll was 6,086, while the virus tally increased to 6,16,312. Five people had succumbed to the infection on Thursday. The number of COVID-19 positive patients dying due to other reasons remained at 1,347, the bulletin said. The daily positivity rate of the 32,344 samples tested was put at 0.54 per cent. The cumulative COVID-19 tests conducted in the state so far are 2,56,25,731. Himanta Biswa Sarma holds meeting with Nagaland CM in Jorhat

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Nagaland counterpart Neiphiu Rio held a meeting on Sunday and discussed several issues affecting the two Northeastern states. Though officials were tightlipped about the issues discussed in the closed-door meeting, sources said the duo spoke only on some "personal and political issues". CMs of Assam, Meghalaya aim to settle inter-state border dispute by Dec 31

Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday announced that they would take necessary measures to settle interstate border disputes in at least six areas by the end of this year. Addressing a joint press conference here, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma said border committees set up earlier to hammer out solutions will submit their reports by November 30. The two chief ministers visited a disputed site at Langpih in Kamrup district earlier in the day. "The committees will present reports before their respective state governments, which will then talk to the stakeholders. After that, a clear picture will emerge and a final statement will be issued," Sangma said. Assam reports 270 fresh Coronavirus cases, 7 deaths in last 24 hrs

Assam reported 270 fresh COVID-19 cases and seven fatalities in the last 24 hours, informed the state health department on Tuesday.As per the state health bulletin, with the addition of the new cases, the active caseload in the state stands at 2,385.With 159 recoveries reported in the last 24 hours, the total recoveries mounted to 6,01,468.As many as 6,11,211 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the state so far and the death toll in the state stands at 6,011.The daily positivity rate stood at 0.75 per cent. The recovery rate is 98.41 per cent while the case fatality rate is 0.98 per cent.A total of 2,47,90,707 COVID-19 tests have been conducted in the state so far including 36,201 tests conducted in the last 24 hours.
