Govt to provide bulk of Rs 15,000 cr capital support to weak PSU banks

Weak public sector lenders like Central Bank of India and Punjab & Sind Bank will get the lion's share of the Rs 15,000 crore earmarked for capital infusion in state-owned banks for the current fiscal. This will help these public sector banks (PSBs) meet regulatory requirements. The capital infusion of Rs 15,000 crore would go mostly to banks which had got money through non-interest-bearing bonds in the previous year as the RBI had raised some concerns on the fair valuation of these instruments, sources said. As per the RBI, the net present value of infusion made last year through zero-coupon bonds is much lower than face value as they were issued at discount, the sources added. These special securities with tenure of 10-15 years are non-interest bearing and valued at par. Such bonds usually are non-interest bearing and issued at a deep discount to the face value. Govt to soon decide on Sebi chairman appointment: Report

The government will soon take a decision on the appointment of Sebi Chairman as the extended tenure of incumbent Ajay Tyagi will be ending this month. Sources said senior bureaucrats and former members of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) have applied for the position. The finance ministry had invited applications from eligible candidates in October 2021 for the post of Sebi Chairman and the deadline for submission of the applications was December 6, 2021. It is not yet clear whether Tyagi will get another extension or a new appointment will be made. On Tuesday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said "the process of calling for application has already happened... shortlisting probably is yet to happen" while responding to a question regarding the tenure of Tyagi coming to an end this month. Wholesale price of tur dal drops nearly 3% on measures taken by govt

The government on Tuesday said wholesale price of tur dal declined by nearly 3 per cent in the last one year on the back of measures taken by it to boost domestic supply and stabilise rates. "The government has taken several proactive and pre-emptive measures to augment domestic availability and stabilise prices of essential food commodities. It is because of these measures that the price of tur/arhar dal reported a sharp decline," an official statement said. As per the data of Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), the average wholesale price of tur dal on February 22, 2022 was Rs 9,255.88 per quintal as compared to Rs 9,529.79 per quintal on the same day a year ago, showing a drop of 2.87 per cent. Similarly, the average wholesale price of tur dal on February 21, 2022 was Rs 9,252.17 per quintal as against Rs 9,580.17 per quintal on the same day a year ago, registering a fall of 3.42 per cent.
