Kerala reports 17,755 new Covid-19 cases, tally reaches 5,351,583

Kerala continued to register an upward tick in its daily COVID infections, registering 17,755 new cases on Saturday, taking the tally to 53,51,583, the state health department said. Kerala also reported 106 deaths, pushing the death toll to 50,674, according to a government release. "Currently, there are 90,649 active COVID-19 cases in the state out of which only four per cent of patients are hospitalised," the release said. Meanwhile 3,819 persons recuperated from the disease today, taking the total cured to 52,18,681. The state had reported 16,338 new infections yesterday. Among today's deaths, 17 were recorded over the last few days and 89 designated as COVID-19 deaths after receiving appeals based on the new guidelines of the Centre and the directions of the Supreme Court. West Bengal records 19,064 new Covid-19 cases, 39 fresh fatalities

West Bengal's COVID-19 tally rose to 18,82,761 on Saturday as 19,064 more people tested positive for the infection, 3,581 less than the previous day, a health bulletin said. The state's coronavirus death toll rose to 20,052 as 39 more patients succumbed to the infection, it said. West Bengal's positivity rate slightly improved to 29.52 per cent from 31.14 per cent on the previous day, the bulletin said. Kolkata registered the highest number of fresh fatalities at 12, followed by 10 in neighbouring North 24 Parganas district, it said. The number of active cases increased by 9,893 to 1,55,376, while 9,132 more people recovered from the disease, but the discharge rate deteriorated to 90.68 per cent. The state has tested over 2.22 crore samples for COVID-19 so far, including 64,572 in the last 24 hours, the bulletin added.

Mandaviya asks eligible young friends to get vaccinated at earliest

Over three crore youngsters in the 15-18 age group have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine since India opened up vaccination for this category of beneficiaries on January 3, Union Health Minister Mansukh Madaviya said on Thursday. "Great sense of responsibility & enthusiasm among Young India," the minister said. In a tweet, he said, "Over 3 crore youngsters between the 15-18 age group have received 1st dose of the #COVID19 vaccine. I appeal to all my eligible young friends to get vaccinated at the earliest". According to the Union Health Ministry data, over 26,73,385 precaution doses have been administered to healthcare workers, frontline workers and those aged 60 and above with comorbidities.
