The Pakistan Army on Thursday opened heavy fire and shelled forward areas and posts in four sectors along the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The Indian Army effectively retaliated. Pakistani troops have violated the ceasefire 24 times this month.

"At about 0915 hours, Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms & shelling with mortars along LoC in Kirni, Shahpur and Qasba sectors in district Poonch", a defence spokesman said. The Pakistan Army has violated the ceasefire 13 times this month. On October 1, an Army jawan was killed and another injured, when Pakistan shelled areas along the LoC in Krishnagati area of Poonch district, officials said.

Shopian: Two militants killed in Shopian, security forces cordon area

Two unidentified militants were on Tuesday killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Kutpora area of south Kashmir's Shopian district following specific information about the presence of militants there, a police official said. He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants fired upon the security forces, who retaliated. In the exchange of fire, two militants were killed, the official said. He said their identification and group affiliation is being ascertained.
