49 flights cancelled in Japan over typhoon Chanthu: Reports

The typhoon Chanthu has hit Japan, leaving at least five people injured and 49 flights cancelled, media reported on Saturday.The flights were cancelled in the southwestern regions of Japan on the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu, according to the NHK News broadcaster.The typhoon resulted in the injuries of people in the prefectures of Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Saga.Chanthu is currently moving to the east over the central part of the Pacific coast of Japan. The wind gusts in the typhoon reach the speed of 30 meters per second (67 miles per hour).

Japan ruling party begins race to pick Yoshihide Suga's successor

The race is on for the next Japanese prime minister. Official election campaigning kicked off Friday for the new head of Japan's governing Liberal Democratic Party, a role that typically signals the next national leader. Four candidates are competing in the Sept. 29 vote to replace outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who will quit when his term ends at the end of this month after serving only one year. He took over for predecessor Shinzo Abe. Unusually for Japan, two women are competing in the race. The only other female challenger was in 2008, when Yuriko Koike, who is currently serving as Tokyo governor, made a run. An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck off Japan's Ibaraki Prefecture on Tuesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).The quake occurred at around 7:46 a.m. local time, with its epicentre at 32.2 degrees north latitude and 138.2 degrees east longitude, and at a depth of 450 km.The quake logged 3 in some parts of Ibaraki Prefecture on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7.So far no tsunami warning has been issued.
