A voter turnout of 65.32 per cent was recorded in the bypolls to three Assembly seats and 63.88 per cent in the Khandwa Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh, officials said on Sunday. In the by-elections held on Saturday, Jobat (reserved for Scheduled Tribes candidates), Prithvipur and Raigaon (reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates) Assembly constituencies recorded 53.30 per cent, 78.14 per cent and 69.01 per cent polling, respectively, they said quoting late night figures of the Election Commission. During the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls in 2018, Jobat, Prithvipur and Raigaon had registered a turnout of 52.84 per cent, 79.61 per cent and 74.53 per cent, respectively, they said. Border districts of Madhya Pradesh are bearing the brunt of the hike in fuel prices, with the cost of petrol in Anuppur crossing Rs 120 per litre and diesel nearing Rs 110 per litre on Wednesday. Similarly, the price of petrol in Balaghat, which shares borders with Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, reached Rs 119.23 per litre. Talking to PTI, Abhishek Jaiswal, a petrol pump owner in Anuppur's Bijuri town bordering Chhattisgarh, said the price of petrol has gone up to Rs 120.4 per litre after an increase of 36 paise on Tuesday. The cost of diesel reached Rs 109.17 per litre, following an increase of 37 paise, he said. Petroleum is brought to Anuppur from Jabalpur oil depot, about 250 km from the district headquarter, hence, fuel is costlier in the district than in other parts of the state due to higher transportation cost, Jaiswal said. Give more teeth to law on protection of medical personnel, MP HC tells govt

The Madhya Pradesh High Court directed the state government to revisit the provisions of 'MP Chikitsa Evam Chikitsa Seva Se Sambandh Vyaktiyon Ki Suraksha Adhiniyam, 2008' and make it more effective in order to protect doctors and paramedical staff in hospitals. A division bench of Chief Justice M Rafiq and Justice VK Shukla, which issued the direction recently, said the state government may consider "incorporating some parts of the amendments, introduced in the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, in the 2008 Adhiniyam to provide more teeth to this enactment and make it really effective".
