Hospital staffer held for black marketing of antiviral drug remdesivir

An employee of a private hospital was arrested for allegedly trying to sell a vial of remdesivir injection at an exorbitant price in Maharashtra's Pune city, police said on Wednesday. Based on a tip-off, a decoy customer was sent to Bhavani Peth area on Tuesday and the accused Shivaji Sawant was caught while attempting to sell a vial of remdesivir for Rs 7,000, a senior crime branch official said. Amid shortage of the anti-viral drug, cases of black marketing have been reported, in which the Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune police have already arrested some people in separate cases. The accused works as an assistant in a private hospital and was in possession of two vials, the official said. The family of a COVID-19 patient at the hospital had procured extra vials of the injection and had given it away to the hospital, and Sawant had somehow managed to get hold of two vials, which he tried to sell at an exorbitant price, he said. Maharashtra records 58,952 new Covid-19 cases, reports 278 deaths

Maharashtra on Wednesday reported 58,952 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 35,78,160, while 278 new fatalities pushed the toll to 58,804, the state health department said. In view of an alarming rise in cases, the state government has announced a 15-day-long stricter measures which came into force at 8 pm on Wednesday and will remain in operation till 7 am on May 1. Maharashtra on April 11 had reported 63,294 COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day tally so far. Also, 39,624 patients were discharged during the day, taking the count of recoveries to 29,05,721, the department said in a release. Maharashtra is now left with 6,12,070 active cases, the department said. Mumbai recorded 9,931 new cases and 54 fatalities, taking the tally to 5,45,195 and the toll to 12,147, it said. With 2,42,149 new tests, the number of samples tested so far in Maharashtra has gone up to 2,28,02,200, the department added. Currently, 34,55,206 people are in home isolation, while

Remdesivir not a life-saving drug in Covid-19: Maharashtra task force

Expressing concern over the panic created by the shortage of Remdesivir, an anti-viral drug, Maharashtra's COVID-19 task force has said that it was not a life-saving medicine in coronavirus treatment, and strongly advised against its "rampant and irrational abuse". The task force also suggested that medical oxygen should be used judiciously during the coronavirus pandemic. The task force, headed by Dr Sanjay Oak, made these observations in the advisory it issued after its meeting held on Monday. Remdesivir is not a life-saving drug in coronavirus and it is helpful during the second to ninth day of illness and not thereafter, it said. "It only arrests the replication of the virus and therefore reduces the hospital stay and convalescence of the patient by one-two days. This leads to a reduction inthe hospital stay by two days at the most. It is possible to save patients even without Remedesivir," the task force said in the advisory.
