Pakistan's landmark, new deal with Qatar for liquefied natural gas at lower rates will save Islamabad a total of about USD 3 billion over the next 10 years, an adviser to the country's prime minister said on Monday. The agreement, signed last Friday, will save the state USD 317 million annually due to the reduced price of the gas compared to the 2015 agreement between the two countries, according to Nadeem Babar, Prime Minister Imran Khan's adviser on petroleum. This "will result in the lowering of the overall cost of liquefied natural gas" imported from Qatar, Babar said. Under the agreement, which comes into effect in January 2022, Pakistan will import liquefied natural gas or LNG from Qatar at a reduced price of about 31 per cent, compared to the previous agreement signed in 2015 for 15 years. Pakistan arrests 17 Indian fishermen for 'straying into territorial waters'

Pakistan has arrested 17 Indian fishermen and confiscated their three boats for allegedly straying into the country's territorial waters. The fishermen, arrested on Friday, were produced before a judicial magistrate on Saturday and handed over to the police, said a spokesperson for the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency. The official said the Indian fishermen were warned that they were in Pakistan's territorial waters and should turn away but did not heed the warning. Fast response boats were used to arrest the 17 fishermen who were 10-15 nautical miles inside Pakistan's territorial waters near Sir Creek, the coastal border between Pakistan and India, the spokesperson said. The Indian fishermen are sent either to Malir or Landhi jail in Karachi. FDI in Pakistan down by 27% in first seven months, says report

Foreign direct investment in Pakistan has seen a 27 per cent decline in the first seven months of the current fiscal, owing mainly to the fall in investment from its close ally China, a media report said on Tuesday. The Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Pakistan during the first seven years fell by 27 per cent compared to the same period last fiscal year, Dawn newspaper reported, quoting the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) as saying. The SBP, the central bank, on Monday said that the FDI during July-January FY-21 was USD 1.145 billion against an inflow of USD 1.577bn in the same period last fiscal year. The inflow during January was USD 192.7 million compared to USD 219 million in the same month of the previous fiscal year, registering a 12 per cent decline. However, the seven-month decline was mainly due to a decline in net FDI from China and increase in net outflow to Norway, the report said. The country-wise details showed that net inflow of FDI from China was USD 402.8 million .

Imran says Pak seeks to enhance trade ties with Sri Lanka through CPEC

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said that he was looking forward to enhancing trade ties with Sri Lanka through the multi-billion dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Khan, in an address following his meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa, said that his maiden visit is aimed at strengthening the bilateral relationship. It is to strengthen our trading ties. Pakistan is part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) of China, the CPEC is one of its flagship programmes," he said. Khan said that the CPEC means connectivity right up to Central Asia.
