Covid-19: Tokyo reports over 3,700 cases amid Olympic Games 2020

Tokyo on Tuesday reported 3,709 new cases of coronavirus amid Olympic 2020 in the city while eighteen more people associated with the Tokyo Olympics have been tested positive.New cases had topped 3,000 for five consecutive days in Tokyo and doctors have also criticised the government's response to the increasing cases, Kyodo News reported.Overall 12,017 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the country which is the second-highest single-day record.A day earlier, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga decided that only patients with severe cases of COVID-19 can be admitted to hospitals, making a policy U-turn.Meanwhile, Japan on July 31 declared a state of emergency to Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, Osaka, and Okinawa Prefectures and applied priority measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to Hokkaido, Ishikawa, Kyoto, Hyogo, and Fukuoka Prefectures till August 31."We ask people to refrain from going out or travelling for non-essential, non-urgent reasons, and to be as careful and ...

Team GB win double gold at Olympic sailing; Italy, Brazil also top podium

Great Britain won two sailing gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Tuesday on a day when four events were decided at the Enoshima Yacht Harbor. Their first came after a dramatic finish in the 49er men's skiff race with the British pair Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell taking gold by inches. Less than one hour later Giles Scott made it two golds for Britain to continue the country's dominance in the Finn class, the team's sixth successive title in the event. Scott retained his Olympic title after going into the race with a nine-point lead. There was a silver for Team GB in the mixed foiling nacra 17 in an event where Italy reigned supreme. Brazil's Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze made sure of gold in the women's 49er class after clinching victory in the last moments of the race.

24 new Games-related Covid-19 cases reported, highest ever so far

The Tokyo Olympics organisers on Thursday announced 24 new COVID-19 cases, including three athletes, the highest one-day figures so far. The fresh additions took the total number of Games-related cases to 193. Out of the 24, six are Games-concerned personnel and 15 are contractors, besides the three athletes. The highest-ever Olympics-related cases came a day after both Japan and Tokyo's COVID-19 infection numbers hit all-time highs of 9,583 and 3,177 respectively. On Wednesday, 16 Olympics-related cases were reported but none were athletes and none were staying in the Games Village. The total number of cases in the Games village currently stands at 23. The organisers had said 38,484 people from abroad had entered Japan for the Games till Monday.
