Monsoon likely to be 'below normal' this year: Skymet

Monsoon this year is likely to be "below normal" at 93 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) owing to developing El Nino in the Pacific Ocean, which poses higher risk for the eastern parts and a major portion of central part of the country being rain deficient, private weather forecaster Skymet said on Wednesday.

Monsoon rains may be "below normal" this year, Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, said on Wednesday. The monsoon is likely to be 93 per cent of the long period average (LPA), it said. Anything between 90-95 per cent of LPA falls under the "below normal" category. LPA is the average of rainfall between 1951 and 2000, which is 89 cm. Skymet CEO Jatin Singh attributed the El Nino phenomenon as the reason behind a possible below normal rainfall. According to Skymet forecast, there is a 55 per cent chance of a "below normal" rainfall.

Isolated places in Himachal may receive snowfall, rain on Friday, Saturday

The meteorological department has predicted snowfall, rain in isolated places of Himachal Pradesh on Friday and Saturday. A feeble western disturbance is likely to affect western Himalayan region from April Thursday, the Met centre in Shimla said. As a result, high and middle hills in the state may witness snowfall and rain whereas low hills and plains thundershowers on April 5 and 6, it added. Meanwhile, heat wave has intensified during day especially in plains and low hills. The maximum temperatures have increased by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal. The highest temperature in the state was recorded at Una at 34.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. However, tribal district Lahaul-Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place with a low of 1.4 degrees Celsius, it added.

Warm day in Delhi, max temp settles at 35.3 degrees Celsius

It was a warm day in the national capital with the maximum temperature settling at 35.3 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average, on Tuesday. The minimum temperature was recorded at 16.2 degrees Celsius, two notches below the normal, said a MeT Department official. The humidity oscillated between 80 and 24 per cent. Both the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to increase in the coming days. Thunderstorm and dust storm are expected on April 5 over Delhi and NCR due to cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan induced by fresh western disturbance, Mahesh Palawat, the vice president (Meteorology and Climate Change) of Skymet said. The weather office has predicted that the clear sky may become partly cloudy towards the afternoon on Wednesday. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 37 and 16 degrees, respectively," the weatherman said. On Monday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 35 and 16 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said the average temperature between April and June is likely to be 0.5 degrees higher than normal in North and Central India."The April to June (AMJ) season average maximum temperatures are likely to be warmer than normal by 0.5 degree Celsius over most of the meteorological subdivisions from central India and some subdivisions from northwest India. Heat wave intensifies in HP

The heat wave has intensified in the plains and the lower hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Department said Sunday. Una recorded the highest temperature in the state at 32.8 degrees Celsius, the MeT Centre, Shimla, said. The maximum temperature in Bilaspur was 31 degrees Celsius, followed by Hamirpur 30.6 degrees Celsius, Kangra 30.4 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar 30.1 degrees Celsius, Mandi 29.7 degrees Celsius and Chamba 28.2 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in both Shimla and Manali was 23 degrees Celsius, whereas it was 14.8 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie. The lowest temperature in the state was recorded in tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong at 2.1 degrees Celsius, it added.

Warm Sunday in Delhi, maximum temperate at 34.3 degrees Celsius

It was a warm Sunday in the national capital, with the maximum temperature settling at 34.3 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average. According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature was recorded at 21 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal for this time of the year. The humidity level oscillated between 49 and 21 per cent. The national capital recorded 0.3 mm rainfall till 8.30 am on Sunday morning. The weatherman predicted strong surface winds during day time on Monday and the maximum and minimum temperature is likely to be around 33 and 19 degrees celsius respectively. Mercury level soars in T'gana; Hyderabad temperature touches

Mercury level is on the rise in Telangana with most districts experiencing over 40 degree Celsius temperature Sunday. According to Meteorological Department,Adilabad recorded the highest temperature with 42.3 degree Celsius followed by Nizamabad, which registered 42.1 even as the temperature in the capital city recorded a maximum of 40.9 degree Celsius. Temperature increases in Himachal

The minimum and maximum temperatures increased by one to two notches in Himachal Pradesh during the last 24 hours, the Meteorological Department said. Minimum temperatures increased by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius during the last 24 hours, the MeT Centre, Shimla, said. The lowest temperature of 2.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in tribal district Lahaul- Spiti's administrative centre Keylong, it said. Similarly, the maximum temperatures increased by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius during the last 24 hours, it said, adding that the highest temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius in the state was recorded in Una. The weather remained dry over the state during the same period, it added.
