Cold weather persists in Delhi, two dozen trains running late

Cold weather continued to persist in Delhi on Tuesday and a thick blanket of fog enveloped the national capital in the morning causing a dip in visibility and affecting the schedules of as many as two dozen trains.The situation was grim for the homeless in the city who had to take shelter inside night shelters.Delhi's weather is set to remain partly cloudy on Tuesday with relative humidity at 88 per cent and average temperature at 13 degree Celsius, according to the weather department.Also according to forecasts, parts of the city might see light rains and thunderstorms for a couple of days from Tuesday.There was however relief from the thick blanket of smog that prevailed in the city on Monday. Clear skies in Delhi during day, dense fog in morning disrupts flight, rail traffic

Clear skies prevailed in the national capital during the day with the maximum temperature settling at 23.2 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, while the minimum settled at 8 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average. Thick fog engulfed the national capital in the morning delaying 27 trains and disrupting flight operations. The visibility at Safdarjung at 5.30 am was recorded at 200 metres that reduced to 100 metres at 8.30 am, a meteorological department official said. At Palam, the visibility was 50 metres at 5.30 am and 8.30 am which led to disruption of flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International airport. Relative humidity oscillated between 100 and 54 per cent, the official said. HP likely to witness heavy snowfall, rain in next 4 days

Himachal Pradesh is very likely to witness a fresh spell of snowfall in the high and mid hills, and rain in the low hills and plains from Monday night to Friday, the Meteorological Department (Met) here said. Stating that an active western disturbance is likely to affect the state from Monday night, the Met centre in Shimla issued a warning of heavy snowfall and rain for Wednesday and Friday. The Met centre said heavy snowfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Kullu, Chamba, Lahaul and Spiti, Shimla, Kangra and Kinnaur districts on February 6 and very heavy rainfall is expected on February 7. Heavy rain is also very likely to occur at isolated places over the mid and the lower parts of the state on February 6 and 7, along with hailstorm, it added. Fog envelopes Punjab, Haryana

A thick blanket of fog engulfed many parts of Punjab and Haryana on Monday even as most of the places shivered under intense cold, MeT officials said. Dense fog was witnessed in the morning at many places, including Chandigarh, Ambala, Hisar, Karnal, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Adampur, Halwara, Bathinda and Farikdot, a Meteorological (MeT) department official said. In Haryana, Narnaul turned out to be the coldest place recording a minimum temperature of 2.6 degrees Celsius, he said. Hisar, Karnal, Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sirsa also recorded below normal minimums of 5 degrees Celsius, 6.2 degrees Celsius, 6.8 degrees Celsius, 6.1 degrees Celsius and 5.1 degrees Celsius, respectively, the official said. Only trucks carrying essential goods allowed to move on Jammu-Srinagar highway

Kashmir-bound trucks carrying essential commodities were allowed to continue their journey to Srinagar, as authorities Monday allowed restricted traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, officials said. Restrictions were put on vehicular movement on the 270-km highway due to heavy snowfall last week near the Jawahar Tunnel and landslides near the Banihal-Ramban stretch. The highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, was opened on Sunday, but with restrictions. "Only heavy motor vehicles, stranded on the highway for the past several days, were allowed towards Srinagar from the Jammu side. No traffic is being allowed from opposite direction, an official of the traffic department said. It was a cold Sunday in Delhi with the maximum temperature settling at 19.9 degrees Celsius, two notch below the season's average. According to the Met department, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average. Humidity oscillated between 95 and 79 per cent. The Met Office has forecast moderate fog conditions for Monday. "The maximum and minimum temperature are likely to hover around 21 and 9 degree Celsius respectively on Monday," the weather office said. At 3.8 degrees Celsius, Bhilwara coldest in Rajasthan

Night temperatures dipped by a few degrees in parts of Rajasthan where Bhilwara was recorded as the coldest place at 3.8 degrees Celsius. Churu, Sikar and Vanasthali recorded minimum temperatures of 4.1, 5 and 5.2 degrees Celsius, respectively, the MeT Department said. Alwar, Pilani, Bikaner and Sriganganagar recorded minimum temperatures of 5.4, 5.9, 6 and 6.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, it said. Heavy fog affected vehicular traffic on highways. Several people were injured Sunday in a pile-up involving more than 40 vehicles due to heavy fog in Sikar district. The MeT Department said weather conditions would remain the same during the next 24 hours.

Minimum temperatures increase in Himachal

The minimum temperatures increased in most parts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, giving much-needed relief to residents. Shimla had a sunny start to the day and witnessed the temperature rising to 3.3 degrees Celsius on Sunday from 2.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The minimum temperature in Manali rose to minus 3 degrees Celsius from minus 3.8 degrees Celsius on the previous day, the MeT Department said. Dalhousie and Kufri had a low of 3 and 1 degree Celsius, respectively. Kinnaur's Kalpa recorded a minimum of minus 7.4 degrees Celsius. However, the minimum temperature dipped to minus 15 degrees Celsius in Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong. The weatherman has predicted more snowfall and rain next week. A western disturbance is likely to cause light rain and snowfall at isolated places over the state from February 4 onwards, it said, adding that the intensity and spread of the disturbance may increase from February 5 to 8.
